I've simplified the look of prev/next links throughout by not having:
a) the name of the next page after the next link
b) a link to 'home', seeing as there'll be a top and bottom horizontal main nav that'll make home readily accessible (and we could always add a home link throughout at a later stage if we really think it would improve things)
I've made them right-aligned and top and bottom for ergonomic reasons - mouse pointers tend to be near the vertical scrollbar by default, so users are less likely to have to move the mouse very far to navigate to the next/previous page.
That being so, you might wonder why left-column navigation is (still) more common than right-column navigation is. Well, that's because having the (sub)navigation at the left guarantees that it's always visible, even if the user shrinks the width of the browser window, or is using a particularly small screen.
